They Only Kill Their Masters

04.12.2014

They Only Kill Their Masters (1972) starring James Garner and Katharine Ross is a pretty silly film. It begins with a dead woman being found on the beach presumably mauled by her dog Murphy, a doberman. The woman, Jenny Campbell, has actually been murdered by drowning. So local cop Abel Marsh (James Garner) must find the killer, with Murphy’s help.

There is some talk about Jenny’s sexual orientation, perhaps the filmmakers were trying to be cool and hip by including some homosexual themes in the film. There is also one particularly silly bar fight scene where Abel shows of his talents as a tough guy and impresses his date Kate (Katharine Ross). Anyhow, this film served it’s purpose, I wanted to watch a James Garner film and that is always, always a joy. James Garner ❤
